Autumn Sedum is scientifically known as Hylotelephium spectabile and is native to Asia and also in Sonoma County Gardens which is located in California. Autumn Sedum is one of the most common perennials on the market and is easily grown with lots of sun and lean soil.
When
Despite its spring and summer beauty, the outstanding season is autumn as it puts on a show at the time of the year when our gardens can use a burst of color. As most perennials are slowing down for fall, this succulent which is a part of the Crassulaceae family continues to bloom for weeks. Large, rosy-coral flower heads stand about 15-18 inches high on a multi-branched plant about 2 ft. wide at maturity.
How
Growth starts in spring with small, Brussels-sprout-like buds at the soil level. These gradually grow into thick fleshy stalks with paddle-shaped, mid-green, succulent leaves. Flower buds form in round clusters at stem tops in early to midsummer, starting out pale and gradually swelling as they broaden and darken in hue, ending up pinky bronze. Blooms continue for 6 weeks or so, fully opening from colorful buds at the end of August or the beginning of September. If flower stalks are left standing until spring, deep mahogany seed heads give the garden winter interest and also provide a food source for birds as they sit on the large spent flat heads and pull out seeds.
At the beginning of spring the Autumn Sedum will have mild-green flowers.
The color of Autumn Sedum flowers will start to bloom as a deep pink color.
The flowers will eventually change to a darker shade of pink.
Over time, they matures to an orange, copper color and it can even change to a reddish color sometimes.
Autumn sedum has similar blooms on stems with variegated, white-edged green leaves Autumn Fire.
This plant will grow best in full sun, or at least six hours a day. If the plant gets too much water or too little sun, the blooms will be weak and the stems can become leggy. In the hotter planting zones, Sedum 'Autumn Joy' will need a little light shade in the afternoon.
The most widespread and popular use of Sedum is to treat pain and inflammation. Current research is aimed at revealing its anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive mechanism of action.
