Sico 1.0 Integrated National High School released a same day-published pamphlet documenting the community workshop.
San Juan, Batangas — Barako Publishing proudly co-hosted a landmark community workshop on July 12 at La Luz Beach Resort, a pioneer in the Laiya tourism industry. Facilitated by WWF-Philippines educators Dino Calderon and Maye Padilla, the workshop focused on co-creating the Barako 77 Educational Module—a localized curriculum component that will be integrated into both public and private schools across the town.
The workshop brought together a diverse and dynamic group of stakeholders united by a shared commitment to heritage preservation, environmental advocacy, and youth empowerment. Among the attendees were Barako Publishing Publisher Ciara Marasigan Serumgard, Barako Publishing Executive Director Farrah Rodriguez, Concerned Citizens of San Juan Heritage Preservation Advocate Horacio “Zaldy” Marasigan Jr., Boy Scouts of the Philippines Senior Vice President Cedrick Train, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Noelito Pasco, Municipal Tourism Representatives Jholo Vilano and Lara Reyes, Rover Circle XXIII Institutional Head and Circle Manager Vincent Fabella, Rover Circle 23 - Musketeers Representative Leann Muego, Casa Amara Resort Owner Gemma Corotan Kolb, Joseph Marello Institute Principal Bega Ladao, Batangas Eastern Colleges Academic Coordinator of the College Department Geraldine Bagnes, Department of Education San Juan East District and West District Principals and Heads of School, Batangas Scuba Academy Instructor and Marine Life Photographer Marivic Verdadero Maramot, Scouting America’s Kirby and Kieran Serumgard.
Participants engaged in a variety of collaborative and creative processes including memory mapping, visioning exercises, identification of learning blocks, and designing contextualized learning experiences. These activities laid the foundation for an educational module that honors local memory, highlights the town’s abundant heritage, and also empowers learners to be stewards of the environment.
Sico 1.0 Integrated National High School Principal Job Triviño and his team impressed participants with their swift initiative by releasing a published pamphlet documenting the community workshop on the very same day! Back in the 1970s, Concerned Citizens of San Juan leader Horacio V. Marasigan found a powerful way to inform the public about the dangers of a proposed copper smelter: the pamphlet. With the use of a typewriter and a Gestetner mimeograph machine, pamphlets were produced and widely distributed through teachers in both public and private schools, reaching students and their families across town. Research now shows just how effective that grassroots system was in educating and mobilizing the community. Horacio’s brother Cesar is the visionary behind La Luz Beach Resort, the workshop venue partner. He was also a valued member of the CCSJ.
The Barako 77 Educational Module is inspired by the brave eco-activism of the Concerned Citizens of San Juan in the seventies, whose legacy lives on through the youth of today. This module aims to nurture the Barako Values (Pagiging Mausisa / Curiosity, Masusi sa Pagsusuri / Critical Thinking, Malasakit sa Kapwa / Care for Others, Lakas ng Loob / Courage), instill pride in local identity, deepen environmental consciousness, and spark collective action in classrooms across San Juan. Barako Publishing proudly supports the mission-aligned Scouting Movement—a partnership that empowers the next generation of eco-champions with values-based education, fosters impactful leadership, and cultivates a lasting love for heritage.

Strengthen Partnership through Oceans of Change Program
The World Wide Fund for Nature–Philippines (WWF-PH), Barako Publishing, and the coastal Municipality of San Juan, Batangas, are advancing environmental education and youth empowerment through the Oceans of Change: Fostering a New Generation of Environmentally Conscious Ocean Leaders program, running from February to June 2026.
Part of a regional initiative spanning the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia, and funded by Dalio Philanthropies through WWF-Singapore, the program equips young people with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to address climate and ecological challenges.
Building on a strong partnership since 2024, WWF-PH and Barako Publishing integrate science, history, a love for nature, and Barako values to bridge learning and action. Together, they have developed localized modules, school tours, immersive experiences, and teachers’ workshops that connect environmental awareness and heritage preservation with meaningful community engagement.
A key highlight was the Oceans of Change: Youth Marine Leadership Camp held on April 22–23, 2026, which brought together 63 student leaders for a two-day immersive experience. Activities included a heritage tour of San Juan’s cultural landmarks — Museo Marasigan, The White House San Juan, and Obligar Pottery — as well as fieldwork in the seagrass and mangrove ecosystems of historic Barangay Imelda. The camp, held as an Earth Day commemoration, also marked the second publication anniversary of the multi-awarded book Barako 77: The Story of Environmental Activism in San Juan, Batangas, now part of the Library of Congress collection.
Guided by the themes “San Juan is My Home” and “San Juan is a Home of Heroes,” participants engaged in interactive sessions with WWF-PH Educator Dino Calderon, Barako Publishing Executive Director Farrah Rodriguez, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office Chief Noelito Pasco, and Task Force Magtatanim Citizen Scientist Mark Anthony Carranza. Honored guests included Barako 77 primary sources and Concerned Citizens of San Juan members Zaldy Marasigan and Rustico Manalo, who passed the torch to the next generation of youth leaders, sharing values, knowledge, and responsibility.
The youth leaders were encouraged to develop actionable project proposals from mangrove restoration, environmental watch programs, and sustainability campaigns.
To deepen the program’s impact, the Oceans of Change: Teacher Workshop facilitated by WWF-PH’s Dino Calderon and Maye Padilla on May 19 at El Jardin de Zaida gathered educators from across the town. This competence-building initiative empowered educators with relevant knowledge, innovative teaching strategies, and practical tools to integrate environmental stewardship, sustainability, and Barako 77 history lessons into their classrooms.
This collaboration embodies a whole-community approach, engaging students, educators, local government, and civil society while creating pathways for mentorship, funding, and long-term impact. The #BarakoAlliance continues to build a lasting legacy by ensuring that its values endure through people, practice, and place and not just memory.
Through this strengthened partnership, San Juan is emerging as a model for environmental action, where heritage, local pride, and global citizenship converge to protect its natural resources and communities.
