“At its core, the copper smelter protest in San Juan is a story about stewardship. It is a story about caring for family, the life-giving environment and leaving resources for future generations. It might be considered an early story on sustainable development in today's parlance. Today, families, communities, and the country face wicked problems brought about by growing economic inequities, climate change, declining quality of education, corruption, poor public governance, individualism, and the pressures of capitalism; the solutions may partially be found by revisiting values which, though difficult to practice, are life-giving.”
