HEALTH & SAFETY

Accidents

Any student who is injured during the school day is to report this accident to the school office as soon as possible.

Animals in the School

Permission must be obtained from the child’s teacher or the school principal before animals are brought in the school.  Animals may not be transported on a school bus.  Animals must be adequately housed and cared for in secure cages.  Only the teacher or students designated by the teacher are to handle the animals. Animals serving the disabled are exempt from this policy.

Administering Medicines to Students

Students who must take prescription and/or over-the-counter medication at school, on a temporary or regular basis, must have a completed form in the office.  All medications will be kept in the office in a locked cupboard, drawer or safe unless a student must carry medication on his/her person during the school day.

A.  Administration of prescription medication requirements:

  B. Administration of over-the -counter medication requirements:

Head Lice

Per the Oregon Health Division the presence of nits alone is not sufficient for exclusion.  According to the Center for Disease control, head lice can be a nuisance but they have not been shown to spread disease. Personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice. If your child has evidence of head lice, the nurse will come home to alert you and advise you on next steps.

Illness and Emergencies

Students with a communicable illness should not be sent to school.  Students shall remain home for 24 hours following vomiting, diarrhea, and/or a temperature of 100.5ᵒF or higher.  Arrangements can be made for the student to have work sent home if the illness is prolonged beyond 2 days.

If a child should become ill or injured while at school, the parent, regular care provider or emergency care provider will be asked to come and get the child.  Students will be sent home if their temperature reaches 100.5ᵒF or higher.  Any student who is injured during the school day is to report this accident to the school office as soon as possible.

In case of any emergency school closure, students will be taken home or to their regular or designated emergency care provider by school bus, if possible.  However, no child will be released from school staff supervision until the school staff verifies the availability of parental or designated care.

In case of natural disasters, fire or other major emergencies, the school staff will work in cooperation with local police, fire, medical, and emergency agencies to safeguard students until their parents can assume responsibility.

Please refer to the emergency plan of Bandon School District #54 at the end of this handbook for more specific emergency protocols.

Sexual Harassment

A complaint regarding sexual harassment should be filed with the Principal or Title IX Coordinator.  Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature by a member of the staff to a student or by a student to another student.  The principal or his/her designee will investigate the complaint and respond to the complainant.  Disciplinary action will be initiated where appropriate.

Our Title IX coordinator is Superintendent Shauna Schmerer.  She can be reached through our district office at 455 9th Street, Bandon, OR 97411 or via telephone at 541-347-4411.
