CURRICULUM, GRADING, & ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION

Grading Progress and Achievement

All students will receive a progress report at the end of every nine week quarter.

Ocean Crest report cards are a hybrid of Standards Based Grading and Traditional Grading.  Standards based grades will be given for English Language Arts and Math standards using a Proficiency rubric.  Traditional grades will be given for additional core subjects (Science, Social Studies, Music, PE, etc.), effort, and Characteristics of a Successful Learner.

ELA and Math will use the following Proficiency grading scale:

4 – The student has consistently demonstrated advanced understanding that exceeds grade level expectations and unusually high achievement.  (Student language: I understand it, I can show what I know and teach someone else, and I can extend the learning at least one grade level beyond expectations.)

3 – The student has consistently demonstrated proficient understanding that meets grade level expectations. (Student language: I understand it and can show what I know!)

2 – The student has demonstrated partial or inconsistent understanding of grade level expectations. (Student language: I am starting to understand it, but still need help.

1 – The student has demonstrated minimal and inconsistent understanding of grade level expectations.  (Student language: I don’t understand it yet.)

Additional Core Subjects (Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, Technology), Effort, and Characteristics of a Successful Learner will use the following Traditional grading scale:

E – Excellent     S – Satisfactory     N – Needs improvement     U – Unsatisfactory

Ocean Crest is committed to clear and concise communication about your child’s academic ability and progress.  Standards Based Reporting with Proficiency Grading is designed to provide more specific feedback about your child’s academic endeavors.   Instead of a single overall grade for each subject, the subject matter is broken down into learning targets, often referred to as “standards.”  Each standard, or learning target, is a teachable concept that students should be able to demonstrate proficiency by the end of the school year.  Teachers track student progress, give appropriate feedback, and adapt instruction to meet student needs.  As such, you may see a score of 1 or 2 for a standard that has been merely introduced in the fall, with scores moving towards the goal of 3 (proficient) by the end of the year.  Proficiency grading allows teachers and parents to have a clear picture of the level of proficiency, or mastery, of learning targets.  Check out the Ocean Crest calendar at www.bandon.k12.or.us for Parent Information Nights regarding the standards-based report card and proficiency-based grading.

Parent Conferences

At the end of the 1st and 3rd quarter of school (November and April), parent-teacher conferences are scheduled.  Teachers will send home information regarding scheduling prior to conference week.  We appreciate your efforts to attend conferences, as parent involvement in academic progress is a major influence in student success. Of course, you are encouraged to make an appointment to visit with your child’s teacher anytime.  Teachers will not be interrupted during class to confer with parents, but are always encouraged to conference with parents at a mutually convenient time.

Student Placement

When placing students in classrooms, we attempt to balance class lists as evenly as possible based on gender, academic achievement, learning style, classroom environments and teacher recommendations.
