Bronze Sculpture

Titled "Ku Kila Kila" (1997), this bronze sculpture by artist. Joel H.K. Nakila is part of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts - Art in Public Places.

The title of this sculpture may be translated "Standing Majestically." it depicts three figures standing on each other's shoulders - a man, a boy and a girl - symbolizing past, present and future. The sculpture itself is about 15 ft. tall, mounted on a concrete base about 5 feet high, with a bronze plaque. Dimensions are 20 ft. x 7 ft. 5 in. x 7 ft. 5 in.

Ku Kilaklia Na Haumana O Baldwin stands majestically in three tiers representing:

• Past - Grandparent - anchor and source.

• Present - Parent - link to the youth.

• Future - Youth - source of new life.

Symbolizes the artist's hope and desire that youth will find inspiration and direction on the foundation of wisdom in our generations past. Face and meet challenges with courage. Gain confidence and self-worth with the guidance of those who truly care for them. Finally, to reach out and discover their limitless possibilities.

Joel H.K. Nakila was born in Honolulu in 1956 and lives in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i.
