What is performance-based assessment?

About this session

Can students show mastery of application of skills using computer-based assessment, multiple choice quizzes, or fill in the blank tests? Application requires that students do, make, or create something. The LWM competency framework values application of skills as evidence of mastery. In this session, we will look at our past tasks to see if they provide students the opportunity to show evidence of application of skills.

Performance-based Assessments

Anchor Tasks

Competencies and Continua

PART 1

At your table you should see post-it notes of two different colors. Grab a small stack of each. You should also see a large chart labeled Rigor vs. Complexity.

  • On one post-it color, you will describe performance-based tasks you assigned to students in the past year. Just provide a very brief description of the task (e.g. Students constructed an argumentative essay and submitted them to the local news paper.)
  • On the other post-it color, you will describe nonperformance-based assessments you assigned to student in the past year.
  • With your group discuss each assessment and place it on the correct coordinate, matching the Complexity and the Rigor.
  • One person will then stand and hold up their finished chart.
  • Bonus: Tweet out your chart using #b21institute.

PART 2

Above, there is a folder containing tasks and another containing all of our competencies and continua. By yourself, with a partner, or with your group, answer the following prompts:

  • Pick a task from the folder or choose one of your tasks. Read and analyze the task. Where would you place it on the Rigor vs. Complexity chart?
  • Peruse the folder containing all competency sets. Choose one or more competencies that you think best fit the task. Don't forget about NextGen Essentials!
  • Would you need to modify the task to be more aligned to the competency? If so, how?
  • How has the continua impacted your thinking about the kinds of tasks you need to create for students to demonstrate mastery?
