What is a Studio?

About this session

At Building 21, we have replaced courses with studios. Studios are 6-12 week problem/project-based experiences that begin with a problem frame and end with Impact. In this session, we will investigate studios and discuss the skills needed for successful design.

LEARNING ACTIVITY

PART 1

What is backwards design and why do we use it?

In your group, discuss the question above. Your task is to create a visual definition that you will use to explain backwards design in 2 minutes.

Bonus: Tweet out a picture of your design using the #b21institute hashtag.

PART 2

Studio Design Graphic Organizer Template v1 (Make a Copy)

TASK

Your task is to start your studio design in the graphic organizer. Start with the green highlighted sections. By the end of the design session, you should have the following completed:

  • A problem frame that is relevant and authentic.
  • A culminating performance aligned with your assigned competencies.
  • A plan for students to authentically implement their work to make a positive IMPACT.

Carousel Activity

When you have a draft of your graphic organizer, you will have the opportunity to get feedback on your ideas as well as give feedback to others. When giving feedback, use the checklist form. If they are missing an indicator, try to leave at least one idea on the form.
