The Role of the Faculty Advisor
The faculty is invited to participate in the Senior Internship Experience as advisors to the students. The role of an advisor is extremely important in maintaining student accountability. The acceptance of an advisorship is optional. It should be based on your judgment of the merit of the project presented to you by the senior. You should also consider the senior’s ability to coordinate the project with the Community Advisor. The senior should already have secured a Community Advisor and designed their goals for the experience prior to asking you to be their Faculty Advisor.
Should you choose to accept an advisorship, please be aware of the following guidelines and responsibilities:
You will make contact with the senior's Community Advisor before the internship begins, to establish a line of communication in case they have any questions or concerns about the internship or about the senior.
Throughout your discussions/meetings with the senior, make sure the Community Advisor has assigned a variety of responsibilities that would be considered “real” to the job environment. For example, a lawyer assigning an intern to make photocopies and file paperwork for the entire internship would not be as valuable or appropriate as including the intern in court proceedings or meetings with clients. Alert the high school administration at any point throughout the internship if you have concerns about a senior's internship experiences.
You will have three meetings with your senior intern. These meetings can be in-person or virtual. One meeting must occur during each week of the internship.
Week One Meeting - April 23rd - April 29th
Make sure the senior has submitted journal entries for the week into the Senior Internship Google Classroom. Read over the entries.
Make sure the senior has submitted their Week One Timelog into the Google Classroom, which will document the hours he or she has spent in AP/Excel TECC/CCP classes.
Make sure the senior has submitted their internship hours through the x2VOL program.
Discuss how the internship is going, and provide any advice/support as needed. As a reminder: alert the high school administration if you have serious concerns about the senior's internship experiences.
Week Two Meeting - April 30th - May 6th
Same as Week One, but make sure Week Two materials have been submitted.
Week Three Meeting - May 7th - May 14th
Same Week Two, but make sure Week Three materials have been submitted.
Make sure the senior is ready for the Senior Symposium. Discuss how they plan to present their experiences.
If you have any additional questions about the Senior Internship Experience, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Baker at sbaker@aurora-schools.org.
