council review

We are looking at how the Student Council functions and would like your input as our community.

Historically we have had a group of student leaders who are given duties and responsibilities to undertake during the year. However over time our role has grown, particularly in the senior school and we are looking at how relevant the council is at this time for Auroa School.

We are fortunate to have a number of Y7/8 students who would benefit from running activities that the Council has run in the past, but under the current system will miss out on these opportunities. Many students who have justifiably earned the right to be a Councillor haven't been selected because of the growing numbers of high calibre applicants in our senior school. The outcome of this is that there are a number of students who miss out on leadership opportunities.

What we are proposing that the Y8 students take on the role of the Council as a whole group. This means we can set up subcommittees from the Y8s to run whanau days, discos, assemblies etc, and in doing so we can distribute responsibility amongst our senior students.

but also giving all our students an opportunity have senior positions of responsibility in the school. Looking into the future, we have a number of larger year groups coming up and we believe

Remembering that there is not an exact science to selecting a Student Council, and there will always be a number of reasons why students who miss out should have been selected, as well as a number of reasons as to why students were selected in the first place. In the end, this is a purely subjective selection based on judgements from students and staff.
