This month’s reading comes from Chapter 11 of “Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally” by John Van de Walle. Chapter 11 titled, “Helping Children Master the Basic Facts,” focuses on developing efficient mental tools that will help our students master basic facts. Throughout this chapter, Van de Walle offers research based examples for developing fact mastery for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Even if you’ve read this chapter before, take a few minutes to reflect on your practice for developing fact fluency with your students and how it differs or relates to Van de Walle’s teaching.
If this chapter keeps you yearning for more knowledge about developing fact fluency, be sure to check out our training offerings during our upcoming Winter Training Series for Elementary staff starting January 25th.
