Overview of the School

Auburn Middle School (AMS) has 627 enrolled for the 2019-2020 school year (5). Auburn Middle School's mission statement is as follows: "Auburn Middle School is a learning community committed to the academic, social, physical, and emotional needs of our students. We provide a broad range of opportunities designed to create individual student success in a challenging, supportive, and safe environment with a focus on ownership in learning" (2). The school's vision statement is "All staff at Auburn Middle School believes that every student is capable of 'Striving for Excellence'. It is our guiding principle that all students can learn. We see each child as an individual who pursues special talents. A child’s safety, well-being and learning are of prime importance to us. We strive each day to educate and prepare our students to become successful and responsible adults and to meet the challenges of an ever changing world" (2).

Demographics

The student body is almost even in terms enrollment by gender; of the 627 students at AMS, 310 are males and 317 are females. According to 2018-2019 data, the average class size of any class at AMS is 19 students. There are about 45 teachers in the school and the student to teacher ratio is 13.7 to 1, which is lower than the district's ratio of 14.2 to 1 (7).

The majority of the 627 students at AMS are white (79.9%). The next largest population of students is Hispanic at 9.6%, followed by Asian at 4.1%, multi-race, non-Hispanic at 4%, and African American at 2.4%. The racial and ethnic percentages of the school can be seen in Figure 1 above (8).

30% of the students in the district are high needs, 19.8% are economically disadvantaged, 9.3% have disabilities, 8.3% don't speak English as their first language, and 2.2% are English Language Learners. The selected populations percentages can be seen in Figure 2 above (8).

Academic Performance

The school's accountablity classification is substantial progress toward targets, so they do not require assistance or intervention. AMS has a cumulative criterion-referenced target percentage from 50-74 and has not otherwise been identified as requiring assistance or intervention based off of other statistics. According to the MCAS results of the 2018-19 school year, AMS is meeting expectations and exceeding state averages in all subjects (English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Tech/Eng) (7).
