Overview of the District

The town of Auburn Massachuesetts is located just south of the city of Worcester. The town is best known for being the home of Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocketry. The Auburn School District is a public school district of five schools serving PK to 12th grade. As of 2019, there are 2,636 students enrolled in the district (4). The district is defined by caring relationships, high academic standards, and their commitment to the community. "The Auburn Public Schools are committed to providing a rigourous, high-quality academic program in grades preschool through 12 that results in students reaching their full potential" (1). Their mission statement is "strengthening connections through rigor, relevance and relationships" (3). The district's vision "is to educate and prepare students for the opportunities and challenges of a changing world" (3).

Demographics

The majority of the 2,636 students in the district are white (80.6%). The next largest population of students is Hispanic at 9.6%, followed by Asian at 4.1%, multi-race, non-Hispanic at 3.5%, African American at 2.2%, and Native American at 0.1%. 30.2% of the students in the district are high needs, 19.5% are economically disadvantaged, 10.3% have disabilities, 8.3% don't speak English as their first language, and 2.5% are English Language Learners. The selected populations percentages can be seen in Figure 2 above (7).

Academic Performance

The district's accountablity classification is substantial progress toward targets, so they do not require assistance or intervention. Auburn has a cumulative criterion-referenced target percentage from 50-74 and has not otherwise been identified as requiring assistance or intervention based off of other statistics. According to the MCAS results of the 2018-19 school year, the district is meeting expectations and exceeding state averages in all subjects (English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Tech/Eng) (7).
