What is the Wellness Center?

The Wellness Center provides a safe supportive environment on the AHS campus where students can go to discuss a variety of issues. Through both on-campus programming and community-based partnerships, students receive coordinated counseling and other support services to maximize student engagement and success. Outreach services and support may be provided on the AMS and FAA campuses.

The Wellness Center celebrates diversity, promotes inclusion, and  strives to create a sense of belonging for all of our AHS family!

Access

How are students referred?

Students are referred for Wellness Center services by the student’s school counselor, teacher, or parent/guardian. In addition, students may self-refer or refer friends for services.

Who may access services?

The Wellness Center's services are available to all students on the AHS campus and their families, and may include students at Atascadero Middle School and the Fine Arts Academy through our outreach program.  Individual, couple, family, parent/guardian, and group counseling is offered.

How are sessions scheduled?

Scheduled individual sessions with students typically occur on a weekly basis for approximately 6-8 weeks. These sessions are held during the student’s electives or other least disruptive times. If additional support is needed, the Wellness Center therapists assist in the transition to community resources. Students are welcome to drop in the Wellness Center before/after school, during breaks, and lunch. The Wellness Center also supports students who have immediate needs or are in crisis. Groups are held during lunch or other times that best meet the needs of the students. Family and parent sessions usually take place after school hours.

Where is the Wellness Center located?

The Wellness Center is located on the AHS campus in the A building downstairs below the counseling offices and has elevator access if needed. The Wellness Center is in a quiet, private location on campus, complemented by a relaxing, peaceful planter and patio area.

The Coordinator of the Wellness Center is Kamela Proulx,  who is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Pupil Personnel Services Credentialed, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. Kamela has worked with children and families for over 30 years in a variety of settings. These pre-licensed therapists completed or are near completion of their Master’s education in the fields of psychology, social work, and counseling, and work in the Wellness Center to fulfill their training requirements and gain experience. Kamela closely supervises all their work and collaborates regularly with their colleges/universities. Community professionals such as licensed therapists and educators with CAPSLO and Lumina Alliance (formally RISE and Stand Strong) regularly volunteer to provide additional support.

The Wellness Center Board

The Wellness Center Board is comprised of representatives from the school and the community.  All share a dedication to meeting the social/emotional/mental health needs of young people.
