Steps to Finding an Internship
Many students want to know exactly how to get started and what the process looks like. Below is a quick overview of what to expect.
Reflect. Think about what kind of internship experience you are most interested in. What do you want to do? What do you want to learn? What skills do you have, and what skills do you want to gain? What are your parameters in terms of availability in a given term, location, transportation, etc? Which term do you want to register (fall, spring, summer)?
Review Internship Criteria, so you understand the general parameters the internship needs to meet (if registering for internship credit).
Update your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn. Make sure these documents are in a professional format and content is both current and relevant for each internship you are applying for.
Apply for internships. This includes both posted and non-posted opportunities (see Create an Internship). Expect to apply for multiple opportunities. Start a spreadsheet and keep track of the internships you apply for. Keep copies of the internship descriptions as well.
Correspond directly with internship provider on application and interview process. Remember that all communication with a potential employer is a form of interviewing so always be professional in email correspondence, phone calls, voicemails.
Communicate with the CGF Career Development Specialists. This can happen at any point in the process. Send position descriptions for review, or reach out with any questions you may have.
