Kyle Ryder
Overview:
This semester I was able to tackle an ever-evolving issue in our society.. homelessness. The United States is seeing a growing difficulty in finding a suitable solution to a basic human need, shelter. I was blessed to work alongside my fellow students to develop a solution to this very problem. Below you can see my proposal below in response to affordable housing and the need for it.
5 Most important Factors:
1) Accessibility both in terms of access to transit and effective circulation.
2) effective/efficient unit design
3) mixed-use + T.O.D. Concepts (corners)
4) community space that encourages connectivity
5) Green architecture being both green space for heat island and other sustainable initiatives
5 Demographic Typologies I could see benefitting:
1) single-parents
2) Downtown students
3) individuals working downtown
4) small families
5) Professionals seeking a roommate or multiple for lower cost and connection

Re-cap of my proposal:
My proposal is to use the selected parcels to develop a 50-unit, 76-bedroom mixed-use affordable housing project targeting individuals who have low-income and qualify for affordable housing. Due to the sites close proximity to the city of Phoenix, this is a great opportunity to help those working in downtown Phoenix and enhance the public transit provided through transit oriented development principals. With the mixed-use, I intend to engage the surrounding area and engage the community and not disadvantage the existing infrastructure. Most importantly, I am seeking to develop this project with quality and the consumer in mind, creating spaces that are more than just 4 walls and a roof.
