People experience homelessness for many different reasons. They include,

In part, poverty, lack of affordable housing, employment discrimination,

Substance abuse or mental health challenges. Today, there are currently 3

In Los Angeles County, at least 63,000 people are homeless, according to a recent survey.

Purposes

Base on that, My initial thinking is how to connect the homeless to the public. Most of them are live far away form the resistant area. How can we make a connection to the public and homeless.

Site Location

It is close to their existing activity area, which is downtown Los Angeles. The mine site is located to the east of the parkway, close to the entrance and parking lot.

Since the site location is vital to connecting the homeless and the public, I chose the Los Angeles Historic Park, which is close to Downtown LA. As I said before, most of the homeless people live in LA. This place could be a transit area between the city and the suburbs.

Here are some case studies of homeless people's design, as you can see, most of the buildings have a feature that allows mobility and temporary housing. means saying, so it’s only service for them for a short time. These units are very portable and lightweight, which are the main features of my design.

Transitional housing

And here is what I am initially thinking about the building type I need to design. As we all know, most of the homeless prefer to stay in tents or camping sites. But today there are a lot of projects that are social housing, all like affordable housing, trying to place homeless people in generic buildings. My thought is, what about placing the homeless people in transitional units, which have not been used for a long time.

Living Unit

By using the inflatable structure, there is a concrete slab which is the base of the unit. The unit is on the top of the ground, which has the distance to avoid moisture coming to the top. The pavement on top is covered with wood slabs. From the inside unit, the whole structure including the airbed is made of inflatable materials. From the section view, it can be inflatable in using and deflatable when not use. The multiple design puropse is to not only provide a sleeping space but also provide a temporary shelter for homeless people.
