For an all-encompassing look at how Boyle Heights' grassroots activists have deployed their continuous struggle against threats of gentrification and displacement, watch this activist released short film. Put together by perhaps the biggest face of Boyle Heights' activism, Defend Boyle Heights, the 14-minute video works to capture a perspective of encroaching gentrification-induced conflict going on in the neighborhood that is often lost or misconstrued when relayed by the press and other media.
The Boyle Heights Beat/Pulso de Boyle Heights is a bilingual community news project organized by local youth. The community journalism led initiative has been instrumental in relaying the stories of Boyle Heights residents. Building a foundation on community support, the publication has played a monumental role in reporting different perspectives of the ongoing fight against gentrification.
Put together by the Boyle Heights Alliance Against Artwashing and Displacement, this project provides a multitude of resources. In collaboration with the Anti Eviction Mapping Project, B.H.A.A.D. produced an interactive map depicting different arts businesses that have "capitalized on the city's strategic gentrification planning and funding initiatives to remake Boyle Heights in their image". The project also harbors other community artifacts and narrative to capture part of the struggle Boyle Heights has engaged in over the years.
In this online event: Zocalo, authors and USC academics join to address how Boyle Heights has been able to maintain its distinctive identity despite years of social distress, political strife, and recent waves of commercial and residential gentrification. In observing the phenomena that is Boyle Heights activism, the group analyzes how the world can learn from the "magical and multiracial" of this neighborhood.
