Abstract
ECMOpulse: A smaller, nimbler, safer, simpler project with good expected returns and potential to save 1,000 lives every year.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) raises oxygen in the blood of patients with failing lungs (e.g. COVID, seasonal flu, pediatric conditions) outside the body, analogously to kidney dialysis. A problem with the usual procedure is insufficient and erratic blood flow out of the body because of collapse of the vena cava. Our product uniquely clamps outside of the cannula, and uses a novel, simple electromagnetic solid-state mechanism. Two compact clamp devices compress periodically to collect blood in the vena cava, and then release it periodically to collect it in the elastic region of our customized catheter. The result is a vena cava region that is never fully collapsed and thus allows fluid flow, with constant flow rate towards the standard centrifugal pump.
