responsible citizens

At Kellands, one of our three values is Responsible and as part of this we aim to empower our pupils with leadership opportunities and increase their responsibilities as they progress through the school. In term 4, our Primary 6 pupils apply for various leadership roles that will commence the following academic year, when they begin Primary 7. From House Captains to Vice Captains, Digital Leaders to Lunchtime Monitors, Librarians to Office helpers, the process involves an application, followed by a presentation to staff and peers in order to get their desired role.

HOUSE CAPTAINS / VICE CAPTAINS

Our House Captains and Vice Captains proudly represent their School houses, Bruce, Huntingdon and Thom. The role is incredibly important as they must encourage their entire houses to embody our School Values (Kind, Respectful and Responsible) all year round. They must motivate pupils to 'give it a go' with House Challenges, often modelling grit and determination themselves, to their peers. Each week, the House Captains are responsible for tallying up the House points and reporting to the whole school via assembly, the totals for that week. At the end of each term the points are calculated and a winning house is announced, earning a treat for everyone in that house.

DIGITAL LEADERS

Digital Leaders are children with a passion for technology who want to share their knowledge with others and promote the use of all things digital throughout the school.  Being a Digital Leader is a fantastic opportunity to take on responsibility, learn new skills, develop and demonstrate leadership skills. Our Digital Leaders go into other classes to assist the teacher and help their fellow pupils during Technology lessons or lessons that incorporate technology, demonstrating how to work various technology and software to peers, and helping staff get computing equipment ready and organised by ensuring laptops and iPads are charged and ready to go.

BUDDIES

At Kellands, Primary 7 pupils get the opportunity to become buddies for the new primary 1 pupils.

During Primary 6 our pupils get experience of being a buddy as children in Primary 6 buddy up with children that attend Kellands Nursery.

At the end of P6, those pupils that are keen apply to be buddies for the next cohort of Primary 1 children and will be involved in transition days before the summer holidays. Being a buddy develops and promotes leadership, organisation and cooperation skills. This responsibility helps primary ones settle in to school routine and buddies are a great role model for promoting positive behaviour, modelling our school values (Respectful, Responsible and Kind) and being a friendly face in the playground.

Here are some snaps of our P1 and P7 buddies taking advantage of the windy weather that we often get! Together they designed and made kites before taking them outside and flying them! It was brilliant fun and lots of communication, creativity, problem solving and collaboration skills were developed.

DOOR MONITORS AND LUNCH MONITORS

Door Monitors and Lunch Monitors play an integral part to the safety and management of the school during breaktimes and lunchtimes. Door monitors are stationed at various doors in the school, in all units, to ensure children are spending their playtime in their designated area of the school. They are also a point of contact for the younger children as they know exactly where they will be. Door monitors also ensure that the toilets are being used responsibly during break and lunchtimes. Lunch Monitors help the younger children while they are eating their lunch, helping the wee ones to cut their food, tidy up and modelling how to be social with one another.

EQUIPMENT HELPERS

Equipment Helpers are responsible for helping set up equipment for School assemblies and for Special Events (e.g. Sports Day, Health Week activities)

KELLANDS KINDNESS COMMITTEE

The Kellands Kindness Committee have representatives from primary 4-7, who all applied for the role and were voted in by their classmates. Together they make Kellands and the surrounding community a kinder and happier place. They run the School Food Bank and spread kindness in all sorts of other ways, for example organising the Christmas Stocking Appeal and raising money for charity through events like our March Marathon. Find out more information about all the KKC get up to right here.

ECO GROUP

Kellands Eco Group has been working really hard this year to help make our school a greener, more environmental place. They are currently working towards a Green Flag award which means they have lots to do! More information can be found out about it here.

LIBRARIANS

Our School Librarians are responsible for the running of our school library, ensuring it is maintained and looked after.

OFFICE HELPERS

Office helpers are responsible for running errands for the Office staff.
