At Kellands, we aim to equip every child with skills that will prepare them for learning, life and work.
We want our children to have the skills that will allow them to pursue any pathway and career that they want.
Throughout their time at Kellands, the language of the key skills will be embedded in their lessons so that they are familiar with the terms, can explain what they are and relate them to themselves.
We created a 3-year plan to launch, develop and embed the six skills of DYW in school - Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Self-Management, Problem-Solving and Resilience.
Year 1 (2021/2022)
Embed the language in daily practise through discussions and school logos attached to lessons. 'All About Me' Sheets, termly targets and reflection tool sheets to be completed by all age groups.
Upper school will have a career focus when discussing DYW. Middle and Lower school will be skill focussed. Start to introduce DYW lessons/ topics. This may extend to including links with external professionals.
For staff to feel supported and confident with using and integrating the DYW skills and language in the classroom and not as an add on.
Year 2 (2022/2023)
Upper school will begin looking at pathways into a job role - qualifications and further education options. They will start to relate this to themselves to begin thinking about what they need to do as they move to the academy.
Celebration day of skills. This could involve sharing how children have developed their skills to emphasise the importance of them. Success of skills being demonstrated to be shared within classes and at assemblies.
Each class have a classroom display of skills linked to the level of the children.
Year 3 (2023/2024)
Build on and continue work from previous years.
Visits to workplaces for upper school children.
Job fair and school visits from external professionals, using parents and local businesses as a resource.
Embedding DYW into our daily culture at Kellands has been a fantastic journey and we continue to promote the DYW skills whenever possible. 'All About Me' sheets continue to be used and termly targets set with the children.
Primary 4 to Primary 7 classes all do enterprising topics linking the DYW skills and P7 take this further with an emphasis on jobs and careers. To this end, we love to get parents from the Kellands family into school for mini-job fairs - sharing their jobs and careers with the children, explaining what their chosen profession is, how to get into it and the skills needed to do a good job!
