This academic year, we have booked a trip for our P7 pupils to go to Craigower Lodge Outdoor Centre, Newtonmore for a residential trip.
The residential trip will be led by Active Outdoor Pursuits. They have been running school residentials for over 25 years, and have been awarded the prestigious five-star Outdoor Activity Provider award by Visit Scotland.
We will leave school on Monday 15th June and return on Friday 19th Friday 2026.
Set within Cairngorms National Park.
Our residentials provide children with challenge and teamwork, while allowing them to experience new activities in a new environment. They are designed to help develop build confidence and resilience.
Each group has their own activity plan, but everyone will participate in the same activities during the residential.
The pupils will be split into activity groups.
The activity plan will be finalised a week before your arrival, however, we may need to change the plan just before or during the residential based on several factors (e.g weather conditions).
The activity plan will include a mix of activities from the following:
Canoeing
Kayaking
Stand Up Paddleboarding / Mega Stand Up Paddleboarding
Rock Climbing & Abseiling
Hillwalking
Gorge Walking
Orienteering
Team Building Challenges
You can find out more about what each of these activities entails from this information sheet:
Paddlesports Day:
The Paddlesports Day is based at one of our local lochs, where the pupils will take part in a number of paddlesport sessions. This might be in canoes, kayaks, solo stand-up paddleboards or mega stand-up paddleboards. We will provide sessions in 2 or 3 different craft, teaching skills by using a combination of fun games, challenges, and journeying. Taking part in these paddlesports sessions is great for building confidence and self-esteem.
Mountain Challenge Day:
This is a half day of rock climbing and abseiling at our local crag, and a half day of hillwalking. Guided by our instructors, the group will walk from our centre in the morning, reaching the summit of Creag Beag before dropping down to Kingussie Crag in time for lunch. In the afternoon, our qualified instructors will provide a rock climbing and abseiling session, before driving the group the short distance back to our outdoor centre. Some groups will climb and abseil in the morning, with the hillwalk back to our centre in the afternoon. The Mountain Challenge Day will provide the pupils with a sense of challenge and achievement, whist helping them to develop self-confidence, independence and problem-solving skills.
River Explore Day:
After a brief skills session, and under close supervision from our instructors, the pupils will journey along a section of the River Spey using sit-on-top kayaks, canoes or SUPs. This is a great opportunity to see the Cairngorms National Park from a different perspective, with the possibility of wildlife-spotting as an added bonus. Our River Explore Day provides pupils with an appreciation of nature, helps to build confidence, and encourages cooperation and teamwork, whilst having fun and enjoying the fantastic scenery. If river levels are low, we may switch the River Explore Day to Gorge Walking and Mega Stand Up Paddleboarding. Either way, a great day of activities for the children.
