The Educational Psychology Service is part of Aberdeenshire Council Education and Children’s Services. Every school has a named Educational Psychologist who works in collaboration with school staff, parents and other professionals to help children and young people achieve their full potential.
When there are concerns about a child’s wellbeing or learning, the link person in a school (normally a member of the School Leadership Team) will arrange for the Educational Psychologist to have a Professional Consultation with the member of staff who raised the concern. This is a professional support for school staff and is not about named pupils - therefore no parental permission is required. You can find more information about Professional Consultations here.
Where they have a concern, and wonder whether involvement from the Educational Psychology Service would be helpful, parents/carers and other agencies should speak to the school in the first instance. However, you can make contact directly with the Educational Psychology Service using the contact details at the bottom of the page.
Requests for Formal Consultation are agreed in conjunction with the school/referring agency, parents/carers and the Educational Psychologist. Usually, this is agreed following one or more Professional Consultations.
Following this agreement, a Formal Consultation meeting is held to explore issues and agree a joint plan for support and intervention. The aim of the Consultation is to create a shared understanding of the child’s strengths, additional support needs and ways to support these needs. During the Consultation, the psychologist will contribute from their psychological knowledge to help all involved have a deeper understanding of the context, and support the creation of a realistic action plan which all agree with. Your can find more information about Formal Consultations here.
