Dear 5th Grade Families,

We enjoyed meeting with so many of you during parent/teacher conferences! We appreciate the opportunity to work as team, ensuring the success of all of our students! Remember, if you ever have questions or concerns, feel free to email us.

Thank you to everyone who drove on our field trip to the Carl Sandburg Home, and braved the cold with us! Despite the chilly weather, it was a great day, and the kids had a great time! See below for a few pictures of our trip!

A reminder that we send home graded/checked work weekly- please be sure to have your child share their homework folder with you on Mondays and Fridays, to obtain any important work that has been passed back, information that has been sent home, and homework sheets explaining the week's homework and upcoming events.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please email us, and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We continue to work on our personal narrative unit- students are in various stages of drafting, conferencing, and revising.

Next week, we will begin reading The Birchbark House, which includes a deep dive into primary source documents connecting to our study of Native American culture and history.

Math: In math we continue to study volume of 3-D objects. 5th grade just finished making cubic unit robots in class where they had to calculate and build each body part. Students are learning the formulas that help calculate volume, as well as digging deeper into how those objects can change to be different in dimension.

Science: In Science : We have just finished our study of Genetics and will start focusing on the Human body systems. We will begin by looking at how the skin begins our journey into the body and make our way to the circulatory, cardiovascular, digestive, nervous, respiratory, skeletal & muscular systems. We will also be integrating a art and dance project for this unit we will use for STEAM day later in the year.

Social Studies: Our Native American unit has moved into the Plains region, where we learned about the importance of buffalo, how horses changed life for the Native Americans of this region, and the interesting concept of a "coup stick." We're finishing up our Haida artwork, and moving into a study of Lakota Winter Counts. Our final region begins next week, where we end this unit with a study of the Northern Eastern Woodlands, the region where the Ojibwe family from The Birchbark House resided. This region, and the upcoming holiday, also allows us the opportunity to look at the myths and realities of the first Thanksgiving.
