Dear 5th Grade Families,

Our third quarter is in full swing, and we are sending out second quarter report cards tomorrow! Please look them over with your child, read the comments together, and discuss their strengths, and where improvements can be made.

Information for our next field trip, to Star Lanes Bowling Alley, will be coming home soon. For now, please mark your calendars for the morning of February 27th! This field trip enforces Ms. Dana's "Forces in Motion" science unit.

Now that we are halfway through the year, it's a good time to review our "Guidelines for Classroom Behavior", both in class and at home:

1. Keep voices to an inside level.

2. Listen & follow directions and procedures the first time.

3. Raise your hand when speaking during lessons.

4. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

5. Respect your classmates, teachers, and your school.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please email us, and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We are close to the end of The Birchbark House, and will be starting the book project soon. This is a project that will be worked on in class, and at home. As we wrap up the book, we're also incorporating different types of writing as reflection: poetry, friendly letters, and summarizing.

Math: In math we continue to review fractions, as well as starting to learn the value of decimals , along with how to write and read them in various forms. Additionally, students will soon be starting to learn the standard algorithm for multiplication, and will be practicing this process daily to ensure understanding of this important process in multiplying more efficiently.

Science: In science our unit on Human Body Systems is still in progress. We are now moving into respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. As we review, students are working on their groups 3-D art project of the human body . As they artfully represent each system, they will use things like collage, mixed media, and acrylic paint as some of the art skills used for this project.

Social Studies: Students are researching their European explorer, using ncwiseowl.org. They have been given a list of information they must find about their explorer (dates and locations explored, hardships, contact with indigenous communities, etc.), and will eventually be creating the backside of their European Explorer Trading Card. Our next unit moves us into a study of the 13 Colonies.

**Fifth grade students visit the ArtSpace library bi-weekly. Books are due two weeks after they are checked out! Our next visit to the library is January 28!

Join us on February 5th and 6th @ 6:00 pm

SCHOOL SAFETY WEEK

Dear families,

ArtSpace Charter School is dedicated to providing the best possible education for our students by fostering a safe, positive learning environment. In addition to teaching and learning, we are intentional about planning for school safety. As such, we’ve designated January 27-31 as School Safety Week at ArtSpace.

During this week, we will focus on different aspects of personal and community safety including lessons, discussions, and emergency drills. Emergency drills are practiced to ensure that our students and staff are well prepared in the event of an emergency. Specifically, we will practice fire/ evacuation, tornado, and lockdown drills. While we acknowledge that emergency drills can cause stress for some, it is our goal that students feel safe, prepared, and comfortable practicing these drills through an educational approach.

Each day of the week will focus on a different safety theme. We also look forward to on campus visits from the fire department and sheriff’s office.

Monday - Fire Safety

Tuesday - Weather Safety

Wednesday - Personal Safety

Thursday - Community Safety

Friday - See Something, Say Something

We appreciate your cooperation and support.

Black Mountain Women's March

A group of ArtSpace students, including fifth graders, helped to organize the Black Mountain Women's March last weekend. These students inspire us with their dedication, persistence, and care for the future. Here's a link to the speeches.
