Dear 5th Grade Families,

ArtSpace students were excited to participate in the "10,000 Flowers" Project, led by artist Tim Gibson, who is planning to engage various communities in painting 10,000 flowers around the United States! We painted through #687! See below for some photos of fifth graders participating!

Fifth graders will have a holiday/winter celebration on Friday, December 20th. A sign-up genius will come via email early next week, as we are asking students and families to contribute snacks, and we'll need a few parent volunteers. Our celebration will be held in the morning, and will include some free time, a book exchange, snacks and treats, and a seasonal movie. More details coming soon!

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please email us, and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

ACADEMICS

Language Arts: We have begun reading The Birchbark House, which includes a deep dive into primary source documents connecting to our study of Native American culture and history. Students completed an inquiry activity where they came to new understandings and made new connections about the topics that are a part of this story.

We continue to work on our personal narrative unit- students are in various stages of drafting, conferencing, and revising. I hope for these to be finished up by the time we leave for Winter Break. Conferencing always takes time!

Math: In math we have moved on to Fractions! Some of this is review of what they have learned in previous grades but we will also be learning to reduce, add, subtract multiply and divide them! Additionally, students will learn how to convert fractions into decimals and percents and how we use this in the real world on a regular basis.

Science: In science our unit on Human Body Systems is well underway. We are have covered the integumentary and muscular system and are moving on to the skeletal system and all its important functions. Look for a current event for science to possibly come home next week to be completed if your student has not had a chance to finish it in class. We will be using these to make a "Come Alive " -Current Event bulletin board to showcase the articles and topics they researched. This will include a summary of the article they researched, why students should read about the topic and a drawing to go with their summaries. Students use the website https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/ to carry out this assignment.

Social Studies: Our culminating activity for our Native American unit is a collage-style quiz, in which students are using their SS notes to show what they learned about the 4 major regions, in a collage, using magazine images and words, their own drawings, and images found online. There are very specific requirements for this project, and I look forward to seeing the final products.

Our next unit will begin next week, and will take us beyond Winter Break- we'll be studying European Exploration, and learning the ways that this land we now inhabit started to become settled by Europeans, and of course, we'll continue talking about how that directly affected those who were here before us. An exciting research and art project comes along with this unit!

We are still collecting donations for Bounty & Soul, through December 13th! Fifth graders also created ornaments and decorated a table top Christmas tree to donate to a family in need, through Bounty & Soul! Thanks to Ms. Cassie and Ms. Marni for their help heading these activities up!

A reminder that we send home graded/checked work weekly- please be sure to have your child share their homework folder with you on Mondays and Fridays, to obtain any important work that has been passed back, information that has been sent home, and homework sheets explaining the week's homework and upcoming events.

**Fifth grade students visit the ArtSpace library bi-weekly. Books are due two weeks after they are checked out! Our next visit to the library is 12/17/19.
