Dear 5th Grade Families,

We hope you'll plan to join us for our STEAM presentations next Wednesday, March 4th, from 2:15-2:40. Our students have been working very hard on the Human Body Systems collages and dances, and they're very excited to share with you! Please RSVP to Ms. Cassie at cassie.petrilla@artspacecharter.org. You are free to check out your child after we're through, or they can stay through dismissal, as normal. Please park in the gravel lot across from the school.

Our bowling field trip will be rescheduled to NEXT Thursday, March 5th, from 8:45-11:45. We will be in touch soon to let you know our driver needs after we determine if the original drivers are able to drive (many of them already paid for bowling). Thanks for your flexibility and understanding!

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please email us, and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

ACADEMICS

Language Arts: Students have presented their Birchbark House bag reports, and WOW! They turned out so well! I am very proud. Next week, we will be doing our portion of the "No Place for Hate" school project, determining text for the picture book "I Walk With Vanessa". Soon, we will begin reading our next book, "My Brother Sam in Dead," which goes along with out Revolutionary War unit.

Math: In math we are hitting decimals hard. Learning how to compare them to equivalent fraction values, putting them in order, as well as multiplying and dividing them. Moving forward, we will also be dividing fractions. Beyond that, look for your student to be learning graphing skills and using coordinate planes.

Science: In science our unit on Human Body Systems is almost complete! We will be presenting all the components of this project for STEAM, and hope that you can attend to see the hard work the students have put in. Our next unit will be on Forces & Motion. Students will be learning all the physics concepts about what makes motion happen, and will be integrating Newtons Laws of Motion in their studies.

Social Studies: We are starting the Colony Advertisement project, with students focusing on one colony to research and create an advertisement for (poster, brochure, commercial, etc.). This project incorporates persuasive techniques (pathos, ethos, logos, etc.), and some will be used for our "We the People" performance in April. Students have been working with Ms. Beth on writing explorer monologues, and interested students will be auditioning for a monologue spot in the performance. Our next unit begins next week, The Revolutionary War!

**Fifth grade students visit the ArtSpace library bi-weekly. Books are due two weeks after they are checked out! Our next visit to the library is March 10!

Evergreen Charter School

Presented by Kriya Lendzion, MA, NCC, LPC, LCAS, NCSC

Parents AND students in 5th-12th grades come together for this interactive workshop to gain shared language and understanding about youth drug and alcohol abuse, greater empathy for each other, and agreements on how to maintain mutual trust through middle and high school.

Parents of students of all ages are encouraged to attend. Students in 5th – 12th grade welcome.

Please use this link to RSVP for childcare (3 and up).

Kriya Lendzion, addiction and substance abuse prevention specialist provides us with the latest research and tools to help our adolescents steer healthily through the increasingly dangerous temptations and pressures to abuse substances. Her authentic and humorous style will keep you entertained and engaged while learning crucial empowering information. Kriya tells us, that “The one thing I hear consistently from parents of addicted or overdosed youth is ‘I didn’t think it could be MY kid.’ The most proven preventative steps we can take are to learn the facts and how to talk about them with our kids. Neither of which is as easy as it sounds!” Find out more about Kriya HERE.
