March 15, 2020

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Families,

As this situation evolves rapidly, we want you to know that we are here with you. Governor Cooper has just announced that all public schools in NC will be closed for at least two weeks, from March 16-30.

Friday, ArtSpace announced a 3 day closure. Now that it has, understandably, been extended, our staff will be using those workdays to develop remote learning resources for our students. Further communication regarding learning materials will be sent as soon as it is available.

We recognize that before they are students, they are children, and this can be scary for them. Please check out these resources for guidance on talking to your children and reassuring them through this. I hope you can also make time to care for yourselves.

We will have staff at school on Monday. Our priority is collaborating in planning for the continuity of education. If your child has personal belongings at school and you need to pick them up, please call the office so we can accommodate your needs.

Sincerely,

Sarena Fuller

Executive Director

ArtSpace Charter School

If you have questions or concerns regarding your child, please email us, and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

ACADEMICS *****DISTANCE LEARNING UPDATES COMING SOON! WATCH YOUR EMAIL AND HAVE STUDENTS WATCH GOOGLE CLASSROOM!*****

Language Arts: We have been taking our learning of persuasive strategies into a Social Studies project and creating advertisements for the 13 colonies. Some students are also writing scripts and planning for the creation of a commercial to advertise their colony, of which some will be shared during our "We the People" performance. Soon, we will begin reading our next book, "My Brother Sam in Dead," which goes along with our Revolutionary War unit. Poetry in large quantities is also on the horizon, as we prepare for our school Poetry Festival March 30-April 3! ***If you would like to come in to share poetry with our students that week, please let me know and we can arrange that!***

Math: In math we are hitting decimals hard. Learning how to compare them to equivalent fraction values, putting them in order, as well as multiplying and dividing them.. Beyond that, look for your student to be learning graphing skills and using coordinate planes.

Science: In science our unit on Forces & Motion has begun. We will be studying how forces are impacted by Newton's laws of motion and students will take part in a discovery lab exploratory with Mr.Steve to see this in action. Students will also interpret and analyze motion graphs of moving objects.

Social Studies: Students are finishing up their Colonial Advertisement project, and we are officially entering the territory of The Revolutionary War! This unit makes a heavy appearance in our "We the People" performance, happening on April 22. Mark your calendars! Many students are planning and preparing to audition for a solo rendition of "You'll be Back" from the hit Broadway show, Hamilton!

Thank you for coming to see our students shine in their STEAM performances, through their body system projects to their dances! We hope you enjoyed them! We are so proud of their hard work!

ArtSpace landscape day Saturday, April 18.

The time is here to begin the landscape planting along the front and side of the school building. We have a great plan and I am excited about this beautification project. Please join me for this fun day playing in the dirt with plants. I will be sending more information soon about how you can help. Contact me at darlene.dimenna@artspacecharter.org if you have plant or landscape connections.
