Ask yourself: "What is the prompt asking me to do?" Find the action words and determine how many parts your response needs.
This step should take no more than 5 minutes.
In every prompt, there are action words that tell you what your teacher wants you to do.
Some examples of actions words: write, think about, convince, imagine, describe, provide, tell
When you get your prompt, circle the actions words and then underline the words that help you understand the actions.
Many prompts are asking the reader to do more than one thing. It is important to understand ALL the things you are being asked to do.
Here's an example: "Describe the goal of the main character in your book. Then, tell if the character reaches this goal. Provide examples of how the character is successful or unsuccessful."
This question has three parts/actions you need to do: DESCRIBE the goal, TELL if they reach their goal, PROVIDE EXAMPLES.
Sometimes prompts ask questions rather than give you action words. You may have to translate the questions into actions yourself.
Example: What cartoon character would you like to be? What would your personality be like?
Translation: IDENTIFY which cartoon character you would like to be. DESCRIBE what your personality would be like.
USE YOUR ACTION WORD LIST TO HELP YOU WITH TRANSLATIONS!
You know you will be ready to plan your ideas when you can answer the question:
What are the action words in the prompt?
