DEAR MAN is an acronym that helps one to advocate for their needs or negotiate a solution to a problem. The following video walks you through each of the letters of DEARMAN.
D-Describe the situation using only the facts, not any interpretations or assumptions. Be specific. Ex. "I got a 73 on the last test I took in your classroom and a 68 on the test before that. I have taken tests for other classes during my academic support class and gotten Bs or above."
E-Express your feelings using "I" statements. Ex. "I feel that I can do my best in a smaller classroom with less people, because I often feel pressured to finish quickly in the regular classroom."
A-Assert what you are asking for. Do not assume anyone can read your mind. State what you need clearly, or say "no" if that is what is called for. Ex. "I would like to take future tests in my academic support classroom with Ms. Perez."
R-Reinforce your ask by telling the person how both of you will benefit. Ex. "I think I will be able to better display my understanding of the material and you will be able to get a better understanding of where my strengths and weaknesses are."
M- Remain Mindful of your goal. Do not get distracted by anything that someone says that is off of the current topic. Come back to your assertion if needed.
A-Appear confident. Know what makes you feel and seem confident. Examples may be a strong tone of voice, eye contact, body posture, clear statements. If you need to practice ahead of time, do it! (Get Ready, Do, Done)
N-Negotiate. Be willing to negotiate and be flexible if needed. Ex. "Could I take this week's test with Ms. Perez and then meet with you and Ms. Perez together to make a plan for future tests?"
