Probability

Materials You Need:

You will need dice, coins and counters.

Here is a site with some virtual resources for you to use.

What are we learning?

Everyone

We are learning to:

  • make predictions based on data collected

  • use materials (dices, coins, etc) to assign roles and discuss the fairness of games

  • play probability games and identify all possible outcomes

  • compare and order the likelihood of simple events

Level 3

  • assign probabilities to simple events using fractions (1/2, 1/6 etc)

Level 4

  • make and justify the probability of events in common situations

Level 2

Dice

Create slides on Seesaw to show your answers.

Roll a die (dice).

1) What number are you most likely to get?

2) If you rolled a die 20 times what do you think would happen?

3) Roll a die 20 times and record your results on a tally chart.

4) What did you find out?

5) What are the chances of

rolling a 6 on a die?

Dice

1) When you flip a coin are you more likely to get a head or a tail?

2) Play Bunny Hop. If you are at home and you can't get someone to play with you then be both players yourself.

3) What did you notice about flipping coins?

4) If you flipped a coin 20 times and recorded all the results, what would you be mostly likely to see?

5) Flip a coin 20 times and record the results.

6) Flip a coin 100 times and record the results.

7) What do you notice?

Watch the video.

Paper Scissors Rock

1) When you play Paper Scissors Rock, what are the options that you could make?

2) When you play with one other person, what is the chance that the other player does the scissors?

Complete the activity.

Here are some pages from the book for you to do.

The first page is the instructions. Read the 1st page and start the activities on the second page.

If you don't have all the materials find things from around you that might work.

Just For Fun

If you would like to you could play this game with others.

Level 3/4

Dice

Watch the video

Create slides on Seesaw to show your answers.

1 Die

1)Predict: If you rolled 1 die what number are you most likely to get.

2) If you rolled 2 dice, what numbers could you possibly get? (List the outcomes)

Roll 2 dice

1)Predict: If you rolled 2 dice what numbers are you most likely to get.

2) If you rolled 2 dice, what numbers could you possibly get? (List the outcomes)

3) How many outcomes are there?

Watch the video to see how to list the outcomes.

4) How many of those outcomes are doubles?

Play the game 'Doubles'.

thats-not-fair-2.pdf

5) If you roll 2 dice, what is the chance of rolling a double?

6) What is the chance of not rolling a double?

7) Is this a fair game?

Watch the video to show you how to write your answer as a fraction.

Adding the Totals of 2 Dice

1) If you rolled 2 dice and added them together, what numbers could you possibly get? (List the outcomes)

2) How many outcomes are there?

Explain how you listed the outcomes.
