STEM educators collaborate to develop, implement, and improve high quality STEM learning activities.
Heritage Academy values the collaborative planning time that the educators need in order to implement STEM and/or the PBLs with fidelity. A STEM Signature Program Specialist has been hired to guide educators in implementing STEM Education throughout the school. Each grade level has a protected planning time built into the master schedule to collaborate on the development, implementation and improvement of STEM learning activities each week. During the collaborative meeting, educators plan and review lessons across the curriculum within the PBLs. The time is also used to discuss, evaluate, and post student work and evidence of learning. Educators are also given the opportunity to provide other grade levels feedback on their displays; thus, providing valuable feedback for the school. One Tuesday a month, professional development takes place for the entire staff. Professional developments have included questioning, Know and Needs to Know Charts, and implementation of the Engineering Design Process. Understanding that it is difficult to guide students with a project that they have not experience themselves, professional learning time is used to allow the educators to complete the activity as well as think of how to guide students through the process. Once a targeted area has been addressed and mastered, teachers move to a new target based on the feedback of teachers as well as administrators ' observations.
