Some things to think about:
Unless your student is the best of the best and in Division I, college sports will most likely cost them money (unless they also have need-based/merit-based scholarships/NM "free college" Opportunity and Lottery Scholarship covering the rest)
Their high school GPA is very important if they want to get into a school with an excellent sports program
You have to pass classes to stay in sports at Highland and Divisions I & II require C's and above and specific classes to play college sports
To be successful in college supports requires dedication and skills such as time management; communication, conflict resolution, and self-regulation skills; patience; flexibility; and more
If your student is injured playing college sports, they can easily lose their funding
Your student is primarily in college to study and graduate with a degree. They need to keep their grades up to play and stay on the team and they will most likely need to have a non-sports career after graduating. They need to choose a course of study in something they want to do as a career just like non-sports oriented students.
It is extremely rare for a college athlete (or any athlete) to "go pro" (about 1%)
