Autocracy - government in which a single individual possesses the power and authority to rule
Birth Rate - number of births per year for every 1,000 people
Command Economy - economic system in which economic decisions about production and distribution are made by some central authority
Cultural Diffusion - spread of new knowledge and skills from one culture to another
Cultural Hearths - center where cultures developed from which ideas and traditions spread outward
Death Rate - number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people
Democracy - any system of government in which leaders rule with the consent of the citizens
Developed Countries - countries that have much technology and manufacturing
Developing Countries - countries working toward greater technology and manufacturing
Emigration - movement of people out of one country to another
Federal System - form of government in which powers are divided between the national government and the state/ local governments
Immigration - movement of people into one country from another
Industrialization - transition from an agricultural society to one based on industry
Market Economy - economic system based on free enterprise, in which businesses are privately owned, and production/ prices are determined by supply and demand
Migration - movement of people from place to place
Mixed Economy - economic system in which the government supports and regulates enterprise through decisions that affect the marketplace
Natural Increase (Growth Rate) - difference between an area’s birth rate and death rate
Natural Resources - substances from the earth that is not made by people, but can be used by them
Oligarchy - system of government in which a small group holds power
Perception - one’s interpretation of something
Perspective - one’s point of view
Pollution - release of unclean or impure elements into the air, water, and land
Population Density - average number of people in a square mile or square kilometer
Population Distribution - pattern of population in a country, continent, or the world
Traditional Economy - economic system in which tradition and custom control all economic activity
Unitary System - system of government that gives all key powers to the national or central government
