Culturally and Linguistically Responsive  Book Club

All ELD classes in APS schools should have access to  the ELD Libraries, which are collections of culturally and linguistically responsive books designed to act both as reflections of students' identities and as windows into others' experiences.  The CLR Bookclub highlights one book a month from the ELD Libraries, including information about why each book was chosen, what makes it special, what to consider when teaching it, and standards aligned instructional materials to use with students.  To join the conversation and add your thoughts on the materials and your experiences using the books in class, join the ELD Network Google Classroom!

We Are Water Protectors (K-2)

We Are Water Protectors, written by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Michaela Goode, was inspired by the 2016 Standing Rock Sioux Tribe protests against the Dakota Access Pipleline (DAPL).  It portrays the Ojibwe traditions surrounding the connections between humans and the natural world, and shows a young girl's journey as she becomes a water protector in the wake of the threat from a "black snake," or oil pipeline, which threatens her people's water.

We love this book for its beautiful and age appropriate treatment of a social justice topic, for its depiction of contemporary Native American people and activism, and for its connections to environmental and social concerns.

Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away (K-2)

Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away, written by Newbery Award winning author Meg Medina and illustrated by Sonia Sánchez, is a story of friendship and change.  We love this book for its relatable story and its representation of familías latinas and inclusion of Spanglish.
