Welcome!
-Today: Review syllabus, review scavenger hunt, work with clay!
A Stack of paper- about 10 pieces.
1 Folder- write your name and period on the front
Get out your chrome book.
Today: We are reviewing the syllabus, reviewing the scavenger hunt, then we are experimenting with clay.
a plastic bag
a ball of clay (as big as your fist roughly) from the good clay bin - wrap in the plastic bag
a cup of water
tools from the tool caddy- needle tool
paper towel strip- ~6 inches long
piece of paper with your drawing on it from the beginning of class
Tu Chromebook
¡Guárdala! La usaremos más tarde.
Vamos a:
This will become your “sketchbook.”
We will complete it on another day.
Copia este cuadro. Este será tu futuro cuaderno de bocetos. Lo completaremos otro día.
What do you already know about clay?
¿Qué sabes sobre la arcilla?
What do you think score + slip does?
Clay — Arcilla
Moist — Húmedo/a
Slip — Barbotina
Score — Raspar
Attach — Unir
Smooth — Alisar
Transfer — Transferir
Take 2 small balls the size of a marble from one of the pieces. Flatten them into clay pancakes about the size of a quarter or a bit bigger.
Wrap one in a damp paper towel. Leave one exposed.
We’ll compare them later.
Set Aside.
If you want, I can also make this more compact for a student handout/slide so it uses less paper.
Now use your largest piece of clay and form it into a ball. The rest of your clay should be in a bag.
Make a small Pinch Pot (demo) in class (and see video if needed).
Scratch the bottom of your pot with Xs using your paperclip or needle tool (but don't go through the bottom!)
Pour a little water in the pot and let it sit.
Add a little water and mush it around.
What happens?
You just made: Clay + water = SLIP (the glue of clay)
Set aside.
Divide your remaining clay in your plastic bag into 2 pieces.
Make 3 balls from each piece = 6 balls total.
You will make 2 snowpeople.
Snowperson #1:
lightly SMUSH the 3 balls together so they stick together. Try not to deform the snowman.
Snowperson #2:
SCORE → SLIP → STICK → SMOOTH
See demo on how to smoothe an attachment together.
Then compare:
Which one is stronger? Try to gently pull each one apart. Why?
Add personality to your score-and-slip snowperson!
Hat • scarf • hair • ears • arms • crown • animal features • anything you invent
Every addition must be scored, slipped, and blended.
RASPA → BARBOTINA → PEGA → ALISA
Remember your bell-ringer drawing?
Flatten a piece of clay (you can use your first snowperson that you didn't score and slip). Make sure your clay is moist- give it a wipe with a sponge or with your damp hand. Make sure it's not too wet. Just barely.
Place your drawing face down on the clay.
Rub gently.
Peel the paper away.
Did your image transfer?
Clay can remember:
touches • textures • scratches • fingerprints • drawings• being in a certain position
This is a great way to set up an image for carving or attaching pieces on top or cutting out a piece of clay in your chosen shape.
No debe estar demasiado mojada; solo ligeramente húmeda.
Go back and check your Wet vs. Dry experiment.
What changed?
Regresa y revisa tu experimento de Húmeda vs. Seca.
¿Qué cambió?
