Role of the Transition Consultant
The Secondary Transition Consultant helps to build capacity, provide knowledge, and collaborate with transition teams to ensure that students with disabilities have the support and preparation needed for a successful transition from school to adult life. They work to empower educators, students, and families with the information and skills necessary to achieve positive post-secondary outcomes.
Career advising is "an integrated process that helps students understand how their personal interests, strengths, and values might predict satisfaction and success in school and related career fields, as well as how to tie these interests and strengths to academic and career goals" (Gordon, V.N. 2007).
The foundational framework of career advising in Ohio is designed to support students in developing a vision and a realistic plan for their futures across the K-12 spectrum. Its purpose is to give students opportunities to discover their interests and explore academic and career pathway options through relevant classroom instruction, career-related learning experiences, and consistent counseling and advising.
To provide additional support for students with disabilities ages 14 or younger (if appropriate), IEP teams create secondary transition plans. A truly successful transition process arises from a comprehensive strategy that considers the student’s preferences, interests, needs, and strengths. The transition plan aligns with the student’s graduation plan. This thorough preparation moves students toward successful future outcomes in competitive, integrated employment, education, and independent living.
