Searching and Filtering are the two most common actions in Aspen. While these two terms are often used interchangeable and the functions themselves can sometimes be used to achieve the same result, they are very different. It is important to be able to distinguish between the two.
Searching is the process of FINDING A SINGLE RECORD THAT MATCHES THE CRITERIA.
Filtering is the process of REFINING THE DATA SET TO INCLUDE ALL RECORDS THAT MATCH THE CRITERIA.
Helpful Hints:
When you think of a search, think Searching for a Needle in a Haystack - we're only trying to find 1 needle.
When you think about a filter, think Coffee Filter - all the stuff we want gets through.
The search for NAC1O1 finds the first match (NAC1O1-1) and selects the record. You can learn more about how to use the search tool here.
The filter for all courses starting with "M" removes all courses that don't start with "M" and leaves 35 records in the data set. You can learn more about filtering here.
