Brushes

When I was in college, I had a painting class that, for the first half of the semester, no matter what we painted, we were not allowed to use brushes. I found this quite liberating! I used palette knives to spread and scrape, rags and paper towels to apply paint to large areas, sponges and bubblewrap for texture, straws bundled together to deposit and scratch paint, spoons to dribble paint, and even my fingers. I love bringing this experience to my students and I enjoy seeing what they come up with.

Painting with a straw

Painting with silk flowers.

Students liked how much paint the silk flowers could hold.

Painting with balloons

I was surprised to see how well paint can be blended with a balloon!
