Self Portraits

Self Portraits

Inspired by Surrealism, Sybolism, and Cubism

This year, we will create a series of three self portraits using a variety of mediums: ink, charcoal, and chalk pastel, collage, and photography. I am wanted studented to find different ways of expressing The Self through different mediums and styles. We will look at a variety of artist to see how they accomplished this.

Cindy Sherman Project (2017)

Cindy Sherman is a photographer that takes photographs of her self. The twist, however, is that these photos are not of Cindy Sherman but the person she is portraying (from celebrities to beaten housewives). Inspired by these photographs, Students decided who or what they want to be and posed for the camera. Most students chose to represent issues dealing with depression, bullying, teenage stereotypes, isolation, trying to fit in, being overwhelmed with school work, and loss of childhood innocence. I was surprised at how dark the topics they decided to express were and it opened my eyes (a little bit more) to the reality our youth has to deal with.
