Farewell to Manzanar
What or whose perspective did you consider as a result of reading this book?
I realized that people in other continents don't have as much food as us, or they don't live in a safe environment.
2. What did you learn about human migration and why people move?
I learned that sometimes the environment you are currently living in, (whether you were born it it or not,) can be dangerous, forcing you to move to other countries or continents. In this book, they have to migrate to a Manzanar Interment Camp in California for other Japanese Americans.
3. Would you recommend this book to a classmate? Tell them why or why not by giving them your favorite parts and highlights, or specific reasons why they may not want to read it.
Personally, I found the beginning interesting. Further though the book, I realized that it wasn't a good fit for me. I personally wouldnt recommend it, but there are definitely some memorably sections. In the middle of the book, the main characters dad comes home from war. His whole family is astonished, they cant believe its him. He's holding his cane with a sturdy grip, no tears in sight. His whole family is just frozen, tears trickling down their faces. After some time, their father gets angry. He threatens to kill their mother. "Im gonna kill you this time!" He shouts after abusing her multiple times. She lay on the bed, hand around her neck with no expression. This wasnt new. He ended up letting go of her, cooling down a couple hours later.
