Long Term Learning Target: I can use multiple literary devices to publish a children's story portraying human migration. These assignments connect to our standard that "Connects geography, culture, economics, technology to show global interconnectedness."
Character: I created a character that demonstrates the trait compassion by cooking and sheltering those in need just like they had for him.
Setting: My setting is based on the real world of Thailand because I personally think Thailand is really cool, and I feel like its a good setting since not a lot of people use Thailand in their stories. (It also gives me an excuse to use food thats not really talked about here)
Conflict & Resolution: My characters main conflict is being too selfish and he solves this problem by inviting others over to his house.
This story is about a Hippo who lives in Thailand, and goes to a restaurant to get a snack before his dinner with his wife. He ends up being 4 hours late, eating almost all of the food they had in stock. Everyone ends up leaving his town due to a food shortage, and the Hippo is left to live all alone. Hes struggling to survive in his now dry environment, with barely enough water to drink. He invites all of his old neighbors to visit and have a nice meal. He uses courage to reach out to them, and then compassion to cook a nice meal for everyone.
The literary devices I used for my target audience of 4th graders were personification and flashback.
1. What do you know now that you didn't before you started your project?
I now know that I take a really long time deciding how to write something.
2. What did you learn about human migration and why people move?
I learned that people move because of their house being too expensive, not enough pay or food, to be closer to or live to with family, I also learned that people move to hundreds of different places worldwide.
3. What would you add to your project that you didn't have time for?
Maybe drawings, I feel like it would've brought it together more.
4. What proof do you have that you met our learning targets?
I have a 8 page story about a food shortage.
