Social Emotional Learning

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. – The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)

Why Do We Lose Control of Our Emotions?

This lesson explains what happens to our brain when we don't feel safe. Our limbic system gets triggered and we fight, flight or freeze. During these challenging times, it's normal for certain behaviors to come to the surface as people deal with different feelings. Please be aware that children need to calm down their nervous system to feel safe again and be able to verbalize what they need. Please watch at your leisure.

Self-Regulation Skills: Why They are Fundamental

We depend on executive functions and emotion management every day—did you know these skills can be taught? Research shows that students with better self-regulation skills have higher academic achievement, are more likely to get along with others, and are better able to build and maintain strong relationships. The creators of Second Step are helping bring these skills to students worldwide.
