Information on Stress and Trauma

Trauma and stress are issues that both children and adults face. Stress occurs when a person is met with the challenge of reaching a goal. Chronic stress, or stress every day, can be hard on the mind and body. It is important to recognize stress and manage it effectively and safely. While stress is a common experience for most people, trauma occurs when a person experiences an event that puts them or someone they love in danger. Parents, teachers, and students could all experience trauma. Trauma changes how people relate to the world. It can be helpful to better understand trauma in order to better serve students, children and ourselves. Click below to learn about trauma and stress and how it may impact the brain.

1 in 5 Americans experience mental illness and 1 in 25 adults live with serious mental illness. Mental illness can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Stress and changing environments can be factors in experiencing mental illness. Serious mental illnesses includes major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and others. Mental illnesses are treatable.
