Teach the Rules

Teach rules and expectations like you would any other skill. This means giving examples, corrections and a lot of opportunities for the child to practice the skill.

Universal. Disruption. Talking. Noise. Throwing. Social Skills. Explicit teaching. Learning.

Steps to Take

  • Step 1: Write It: Write down important rules, either on a poster or piece of paper that can be posted on the wall. *Each child can make a copy if needed. These rules should be clear and specific.

  • Step 2: Teach It: Take time to go over each rule and break it down for the child. Explain the reason for the rule, why it is important, and a good example of what it looks like to follow the rule. Try to focus on what following the rule would look like, not what breaking the rule would look like. Let the child know that you will be watching to see if these rules are being followed.

  • Step 3: Praise: Throughout the day, give the child praise that is specific and clear at least 3 times. In your praise, say their name and exactly what they did that was right. "Johnathon, I appreciate how you asked to leave the table before standing up."

  • Step 4: Highlight Real: The next day, revisit the rules shortly in the morning and praise moments from the previous day when the child succeeded. Give praise where praise is due. Try to not focus on bad behavior or rule breaking from the day before.

Tips

  • Praise is powerful and can be used to change most types of behavior. Try to give at least 3 moments of praise for child in a day.

  • Clear and specific rules let children know what is expected from them.

  • Focus on rules that are used in different situations.
