You will find a link to Spellingcity, a fun site that has our spelling lists for the year. You can practice old spelling lists or work on this week’s words. You will also find some additional words that practice our word working skill for that week. Please have fun.FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER/JANUARY REVIEWOn January 17th, we reached the halfway mark! Ninety days of first grade are behind us. We learned a lot about the Civil Rights movement, Martin Luther King and others who fought for equality and fairness. We learned about the phases of the sun and moon, maps, seasons and nutrition. We’ve been concentrating on using all our reading strategies and tools in January and now we’re focusing on fluency and comprehension. We have a class of great readers. I was able to assess every student in reading and I was pleased with the results. I have really been concentrating on Guided Reading and I am excited when I listen to our students read. They are making great progress. We will begin a math unit on gathering and recording data and we've been finishing up our unit on shapes and geometry. We are also expanding on addition and subtraction. The 100th Day of school was January 31st and we did a lot of activities that centered around our number system and counting in groups of ten.LOOKING AHEAD IN FEBRUARY:Valentines Day is on a Thursday the 14th. We’re planning our party for 2:00-3:15. Our wonderful moms are already hard at work planning and preparing for it. I’ve attached a list of our classmates to help you address the Valentine cards. The annual storytelling competition is scheduled for February as well. If your child would like to participate, send in the entry form that was sent home after the kick-off assembly (Jan. 28) I also have entry blanks in our classroom. Our class competition will be held on February 13th and winners will compete in the First Grade competition on February 22nd. Winners will then go on to compete in the K-3 competition on Feb. 27th.We’ll be learning about the Presidents of the United States this month in anticipation of Presidents Day on the 18th. No school that day.Be sure to mark those reading calendars EVERY DAY. Practicing our reading is so important. We have so many students who are really becoming fluent and excellent readers and it is due in part to the amount of practicing they do. I will hand out a Combined February/March Book Order this month. It will be due Feb. 28th .I’ve tried to include all this information on the reading calendar, so be sure to check it out as you mark the reading homework. HAPPY READING!
