I am Dylan van Dijk, your teacher and conductor. Whether you are in Concert or Select Choir I highly recommend you build yourself as a musician as much as possible during the break before we begin the next school year. Here are some ways you can do that:
Warm up your voice often. You can use either of these: Warm-up 1 Warm-up 2
Be creative. Record yourself singing a solo with your own musical stylings and improvisations. Use karaoke tracks on youtube.
Build your working knowledge of music theory by exploring the lessons and exercises here: Music Theory
Pitch and rhythm/tempo - Sing along to songs you like and practice matching the notes exactly with your voice. Tap along to the beat. These are skills you NEED to have as you enter the course.
All the best!!

Hello AISJ! My name is Mr. Nicholas Boreen(Mr. B). I look forward to beginning my teaching at AISJ this year as I attempt to fill the shoes of our former middle school and high school band teacher, Ms. Van Kennedy.
This year I will be working with all band scholars in Beginning Band classes, where we will explore our new instruments by performing and creating music with them.
In intermediate band classes, I will be looking to challenge scholars further to expand their instrument range while improving their music reading and technical abilities on their respective instruments.
Before we get started, we will have some summer work. I know. I know. It is not ideal. But! Working over the summer will mean we can make the most of our time together.
I look forward to a very exciting year of music and performances from everyone! I cannot wait to get started!
Feel free to reach out with any questions at nboreen@aisj.edu.sa.

Welcome Message
Dear Scholars,
I am so excited to welcome you to the theatre. We will have great fun acting, designing, and producing scenes and plays as well as building skills in speaking, movement, creativity, and collaboration. Here is a short video from me. See you next year!
Sincerely,
Ms Smith
THEATRE SUMMER RECOMMENDATIONS:
The most crucial way to learn about theatre is to attend a performance. Best case scenario, watch a live stage show over the summer (play or musical) and be ready to share the experience in the fall. If you are in the states, look for local Shakespeare in the Park performances. They are free and fun! If live theatre isn’t available in your area, check out these Youtube channels from time to time and enjoy what they have to offer.
Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration - This is a remarkable video commemorating one of the legends of musical theatre Stephen Sondheim. The tributes and performances are fantastic. This is a great video to show the quality work that Broadway stars put in in order to succeed.
Beginning Band Summer Recommendations:
Get familiar with the instrument you might be starting on. Read about it. Learn the names of the parts and pieces. Watch videos. Figure out how it makes the sound that it makes. Look up new vocabulary words like "embouchure" and come to the first class with lots of questions! The more you know about your new instruments the quicker we will get to playing songs on them.
Intermediate Band Summer Recommendations:
Review! Review! Review! I will be looking to see what you know from the very first day of class. This will determine where we start and how far we go this year. Please be ready to show me your existing range, old songs that you know, new paradiddles that you've learned, scales and anything else that you can. Do not come to the first class having forgotten everything from last year!
