Why study Mathematics AS?

Mathematics is a very satisfying subject, challenging and enjoyable for its own sake. An understanding of Mathematics is at the heart of every modern industry and science. Mathematical competence is an essential component in physical sciences, technology, business and Medicine. In today’s world, Mathematics has an important role in providing the key skills needed in many different careers. It provides a logical approach and intellectual rigour that contribute to an ability to solve a wide variety of problems.

If you are thinking of taking A Levels in Physics and/or Chemistry but you do not wish to take the full A Level in Mathematics, then AS Mathematics should be taken. If you are taking A Level Biology but do not wish to take the full A Level in Mathematics, then AS Mathematics or Statistics in Context should be taken. The level of Mathematics in these sciences will be best supported by you continuing to develop your algebra and problem solving strategies.

Special features of the course

All students are given the chance to participate in the Senior Maths Challenge and the Senior Team Maths Challenge.

Costs

A Casio Classwiz fx-991EX calculator is essential for the course approx. £25.

A graphical calculator is not essential but you may wish to purchase one, approximate cost is £100 (Casio CG50)

How is the course organised?

The AS will run over 2 years with final examinations in Year 13. You will study Pure Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, and Mechanics.

Assessment

There will be one 2 hour Pure paper and one 1hr 15min Applied paper.

Time commitment

2 taught hours per week in addition to private study time across Y12 and Y13.
