FAQs

1. What are the application deadline dates?

  • AHS students: Friday 10 December (using Options Online)

  • Applications to join AHS from another school: Monday 10 January (using Admissions+)

As soon as we get your choices we start to work out how many classes we need for each subject and begin work on next year’s timetable.

2. Can I apply after the closing dates?

We will make it clear on the school website if we are still accepting applications. All offers of places are subject to meeting the entry requirements so we sometimes have a small number of places available after GCSE Results Day on 25 August; please look at the website on the afternoon of 25 August to see our status.

3. Will I get my choices?

We do our best to meet everyone’s requests and can normally accommodate most combinations of subjects. In the spring term we create the main option blocks and it is possible that we cannot fit everyone’s permutations at that point although this is unusual.

Subjects will only run if there are sufficient students wanting to take them.

4. Can I change my mind?

If you want to change your subjects after submitting your application then you have a better chance if it is before we have made the option blocks and created the classes, but we will always try to fit you in if we can. We don’t normally let anyone change courses after the first three weeks of the autumn term.

5. Can I do five main subjects?

If you take Further Maths you may be an exception to the rule but for everyone else the answer is no, for two reasons.

The first is practical: there are no main subjects apart from Further Maths available in the Extension Studies block.

The second is that taking three (or four) main subjects is quite sufficient to gain entry to any university course or employment. If you feel you have extra capacity then it is much better used on developing other skills which will assist your application, or even just giving you some spare time.

6. Can I take an Extension Study in addition to Further Maths?

Unfortunately not. Further Maths A Level takes place in the Extension Studies block so the lessons will clash with the Extension Studies options.

7. Who do I speak to about my application?

  • To discuss individual subjects speak to Subject Team Leaders

  • To discuss options speak to Mrs Sutton, Mr Ochiltree or any member of the Leadership Team

  • To change options after applying speak to Mrs Wilkes
