Restricted Areas
Special Use Airspace (SUA) where the flight of aircraft, while not entirely forbidden, is subject to strict limitations due to hazardous operations taking place inside. Here is a breakdown of why they exist, how they operate, and how pilots navigate them.
Restricted Areas denote the existence of unusual, often invisible hazards to aircraft. These areas are established to protect nonparticipating aircraft from ground-based or airborne dangers, and to protect the operations themselves.
Examples: Artillery firing, missile launching, aerial gunnery, or flight testing of experimental/unmanned aircraft.
On Sectional Charts: They are depicted with blue, combed boundaries and labeled with the letter "R" followed by a number (e.g., R-2508)
The Golden Rule: No person may operate an aircraft within a restricted area contrary to the restrictions imposed, unless they have received advance permission from the using or controlling agency. The restrictiveness of this airspace depends entirely on whether the area is currently "Hot" (active) or "Cold" (inactive).
If it is Cold: The controlling agency (ATC) will clear you straight through the airspace as if it weren't even there.
If it is Hot: You will be denied entry. If flying VFR, you must navigate entirely around its boundaries. If flying IFR, ATC will automatically clear you along a route that avoids the airspace
Because Restricted Areas are not always active 24/7, pilots must verify their status before and during a flight:
Check the Legend: The margin of the sectional chart lists the specific hours of operation (e.g., 0800–2300 LT or By NOTAM), the vertical altitudes affected, and the controlling agency.
Pre-Flight Briefing: Checking NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) during your weather briefing will tell you if a "By NOTAM" area is scheduled to activate.
In-Flight Verification: The safest practice is to call the regional ATC Center frequency while airborne to request the current status of the Restricted Area before getting close to its borders
